Plymouth is the county seat.
In 1799, the western third of Tyrrell County was taken and used to make the county.
George Washington’s name was given to it.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 424 square miles (1,100 km2), 348 square miles (900 km2) of which are land and 76 square miles (200 km2) of which are water, or 18%.
The Albemarle Sound is on the edge of the county.
