The population was 7,685 as of the 2020 United States Census.
Worland is its county seat.
Washakie County was formed on February 21, 1911, as Hanover County from land separated from Big Horn County, and it was organized in 1913.
The county was first named “Hanover County” in the bill, but it was renamed Washakie County before the measure passed in honor of Chief Washakie, the Shoshone people’s head chief who became an ally of the US Government.
The county has a total area of 2,243 square miles (5,810 km2), of which 2,239 square miles (5,800 km2) is land and 4.2 square miles (11 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the US Census Bureau.
