Wallowa County (/wlaw/) is the most northeastern county in Oregon, United States.
The population was 7,391 as of the 2020 census, making it Oregon’s fifth-least populous county. Enterprise is the county seat.
The origins of the county’s name are unknown, according to Oregon Geographic Names, with the most likely explanation being that it is derived from the Nez Perce term for a structure of stakes (a weir) used in fishing.
Another theory is that the name Wallowa is derived from a Nez Perce word for “winding water.”
The Wallowa River is referred to as Wil-le-wah in the journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Wallowa County is one of the eight counties that comprise Eastern Oregon.
Wallowa is Oregon’s most northeastern county.
The county has a total area of 3,152 square miles (8,160 km2), of which 3,146 square miles (8,150 km2) is land and 5.5 square miles (14 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.[
