It is in the east central part of the state.

Huntsville is the county seat.
At first, Walker County was named after Robert J. Walker, a lawmaker from Mississippi who brought the plan to add Texas to the United States to Congress.
The Huntsville Micropolitan Statistical Area is part of the Houston-The Woodlands Combined Statistical Area. This means that Walker County is also a part of this area.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 802 square miles (2,080 km2), of which 784 square miles (2,030 km2) are land and 17 square miles (44 km2) are water, or 2.2%.
