Wahkiakum County (/wka.km/) is a county in Washington, United States.
The population was 4,422 as of the 2020 census, making it one of Washington’s least populous counties.
Cathlamet is the county seat and the county’s only incorporated town.
The county was founded in April 1854 from Cowlitz County and is named for Chief Wahkiakum (“Tall Timber”) of the Chinook, who is buried in Cathlamet’s Pioneer Cemetery.
The county runs the Wahkiakum County Ferry, which crosses the Columbia River from Cathlamet to Westport, Oregon.
The county has a total area of 287 square miles (740 km2), of which 263 square miles (680 km2) is land and 24 square miles (62 km2) (8.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
It is Washington’s smallest county by total size and the third-smallest by land area, after San Juan County and Island County, both of which are mainly water.
