It is pronounced /wdin/ w-DEEN-.
As of the census in 2020, there were 14,065 people living there.
Wadena is the county seat.
On June 11, 1858, the county was made by the newly formed Minnesota Legislature. In 1871, people moved into the area that would become Wadena, and by 1873, there was a post office there.
The county is 543 square miles (1,410 km2) in size, with 536 square miles (1,390 km2) of land and 7.0 square miles (18 km2) of water, or 1.3%.
Wadena is one of 17 counties in Minnesota where savanna soils are more common than prairie or forest soils.
