The county was made on February 12, 1820, and on March 18, 1837, it was put together.
It is named after Isaac Van Wart, who was one of the people who took John André prisoner during the American Revolutionary War.
The Lima-Van Wert-Celina, OH Combined Statistical Area is made up of the Lima-Van Wert-Celina, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area and the Van Wert, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 410 square miles (1,100 km2), of which 409 square miles (1,060 km2) are land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2) (0.3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
