Val Verde County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas located in the southern Edwards Plateau.
The population in 2020 is 47,586 people.
Del Rio is the county seat.
Val Verde County is included in the Del Rio micropolitan statistical region.
Val Verde, which meaning “green valley,” was named after a Civil War fight. Sibley’s Brigade soldiers took part in the Texas invasion of New Mexico Territory in 1862, where they seized several artillery pieces at the Battle of Val Verde.
The fight is commemorated in the name of the county as well as a tiny hamlet in Milam County.
The county has a total area of 3,233 square miles (8,370 km2), of which 3,145 square miles (8,150 km2) are land and 88 square miles (230 km2) (2.7%) are water.
