Buckhannon is the county seat.
Abel Parker Upshur, a prominent Virginia legislator and judge, was named for the county, which was founded in 1851 from Randolph, Barbour, and Lewis counties.
Under President John Tyler, Upshur served as Secretary of State and Secretary of the Navy.
The county has a total area of 355 square miles (920 km2), of which 354.9 square miles (919 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.26 km2) (0.03%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
