Union County is the southernmost county in South Dakota, United States.
The population was 16,811, according to the 2020 census, making it South Dakota’s 13th most populous county.
Elk Point has been the county seat since April 30, 1865.
Because of Civil War sentiment, the county’s name was changed to Union on January 7, 1864.
Union County is included in the Sioux City, IA-NE-SD Combined Statistical Area.
Founded as Cole County on April 10, 1862, it was renamed Union County on January 7, 1864, when its boundaries were expanded to include land previously part of neighboring Lincoln County.
On April 30, 1865, the county seat was relocated from Richland to Elk Point.
The county covers 467 square miles (1,210 km2), of which 461 square miles (1,190 km2) are land and 6.6 square miles (17 km2) (1.4%) are water.
It is the fifth-smallest county in South Dakota in terms of land area.
