Tuscola County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan’s Thumb region.
The population was 53,323 at the time of the 2020 census.
Caro is the county seat.
On April 1, 1840, Michigan Law established the county from land in Sanilac County and attached it to Saginaw County for administrative purposes.
On March 2, 1850, the Michigan Legislature passed legislation empowering county residents to organize governmental functions.
Tuscola County is one of the five counties that make up the Thumb region. Tuscola County, like the rest of the Thumb, benefits from seasonal tourism from cities such as Flint, Detroit, and Saginaw.
The county has a total area of 914 square miles (2,370 km2), of which 803 square miles (2,080 km2) is land and 111 square miles (290 km2) (12%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
