New Philadelphia is the county seat. Its name comes from a Delaware Indian word that means “old town” or “open mouth” in different ways.
The New Philadelphia–Dover, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area is part of Tuscarawas County, and it is also part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 571 square miles (1,480 km2), of which 568 square miles (1,470 km2) are land and 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) (0.71%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
