The population was 6,762 as of the 2020 census, making it West Virginia’s fourth-least populous county.
Parsons serves as the county seat.
The county was formed in 1856 from a portion of Randolph County, which was then a part of Virginia. A tiny portion of Barbour County was transferred to Tucker County in 1871.
The county was named for Henry St. George Tucker, Sr., a Williamsburg, Virginia judge and Congressman.
The county has a total area of 421 square miles (1,090 km2), of which 419 square miles (1,090 km2) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
