The county was made in 1874, and the next year it was set up.
It is named after Confederate soldier and lawyer Thomas Green.
Tom Green County is part of the San Angelo metropolitan statistical area.
Goodfellow Air Force Base and Angelo State University, which is part of the Texas Tech University System, are both in the county.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 1,541 sq mi (3,990 km2), of which 1,522 sq mi (3,940 km2) are land and 19 sq mi (49 km2) (1.2%) are water.
