The population was 25,262 at the time of the 2020 census.
Long Prairie is the county seat.
The county was established on February 20, 1855, by the Minnesota Territorial legislature, but the county government was not established until January 1, 1867, with Long Prairie as the county seat.
It was named after John Blair Smith Todd, a Dakota Territory delegate to the United States House of Representatives and Union Army general during the American Civil War.
The county has a total area of 980 square miles (2,500 square kilometers), of which 945 square miles (2,450 km2) is land and 35 square miles (91 km2) (3.5%) is water.
