Covington is the county seat.
Tipton County, established in 1823, is included in the Memphis, TN-MS-AR Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 473 square miles (1,230 km2), of which 458 square miles (1,190 km2) is land and 15 square miles (39 km2) (3.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
U.S. Highway 51, the main north-south route, cuts through Tipton County and passes through Covington.
