Pender is the county seat.
Thurston County was formed in 1889 by European Americans from land that had previously been divided between Dakota and Burt counties following the dissolution of Blackbird County in 1879.
It was named after United States Senator John M. Thurston.
Thurston County is 396 square miles (1,030 km2) in size, with 394 square miles (1,020 km2) being land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) (0.6%) being water.
The county’s land area is entirely made up of Omaha and Winnebago Indian reservations.
