The population was 40,429 at the time of the 2020 census.
Tazewell is its county seat.
Tazewell County is included in the Bluefield, West Virginia-Virginia Micropolitan Statistical Area.
From the late 1800s until the early 1900s, its economy was based on coal and iron from the Pocahontas Fields.
The county has a total area of 520 square miles (1,300 km2), of which 519 square miles (1,340 km2) is land and 1.1 square miles (2.8 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
