Peoria County was split into Tazewell County in 1827. Most people agree that it was named after Littleton Tazewell, who was in the U.S. Senate and became the Governor of Virginia in 1834.
It could have been named after Littleton’s father, Henry Tazewell, a well-known politician in Virginia. Tazewell County, Virginia, is named after Henry Tazewell.
