Tate County is a county in the U.S. state of Mississippi’s northwestern region.
The population was 28,064 according to the 2020 census.
Senatobia is the county seat.
The county was formed in 1873 during the Reconstruction period from portions of DeSoto, Marshall, and Tunica counties and is named after Thomas Simpson Tate, one of the area’s first prominent American settlers.
Tate County is included in the Memphis, TN-MS-AR Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 411 square miles (1,060 km2), of which 405 square miles (1,050 km2) is land and 6.2 square miles (16 km2) (1.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
By land area, it is Mississippi’s third-smallest county.
