Tulia is the county seat.
The county was established in 1876 and incorporated in 1890.
It is named for James G. Swisher, a Texas Revolutionary War veteran and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
The vast JA Ranch, created by Charles Goodnight and John George Adair and later held by Goodnight and Cornelia Adair, once encompassed six counties, including Swisher.
The county has a total area of 901 square miles (2,330 km2), of which 890 square miles (2,300 km2) is land and 11 square miles (28 km2) (1.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
