According to the 2020 census, the population was 38,434 people.
Montrose is the county seat.
The county was formed on February 21, 1810, from a portion of Luzerne County, and was later incorporated in 1812. It takes its name from the Susquehanna River.
The county has a total area of 832 square miles (2,150 km2), of which 823 square miles (2,130 km2) is land and 8.7 square miles (23 km2) (1.0%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
