It has the greatest percentage of residents aged 65 and over (55.6% in 2014-2018) and the oldest median age (68.3 years) of any US county (in 2009–2013).
Bushnell is the county seat, and The Villages is the major community.
Sumter County is part of the Orlando-Lakeland-Deltona, FL Combined Statistical Area, as is The Villages, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 580 square miles (1,500 km2), of which 547 square miles (1,420 km2) is land and 33 square miles (85 km2) (5.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
