This made it the second-least populated county in New Hampshire.
Newport is the county seat.
The Claremont-Lebanon, NH-VT Micropolitan Statistical Area has Sullivan County as a part of it.
In 1827, the northern part of Cheshire County was split off at Newport and made into Sullivan County.
It is named after John Sullivan (1740–1795), who was a hero of the American Revolution and a governor at one time.
The county has a total area of 552 square miles (1,430 km2), of which 537 square miles (1,390 km2) are land and 15 square miles (39 km2) (2.7%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
It has the third-smallest land area of any county in New Hampshire.
