The county government was gotten rid of in 1999, so now Suffolk County is just a part of the state government that helps run things and a group of communities that are put together for statistical purposes.
Suffolk County is in the middle of both the Greater Boston-Worcester-Providence, MA-RI-NH-CT Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Greater Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH Combined Statistical Area.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 120 square miles (310 km2) in size, with 58 square miles (150 km2) of land and 62 square miles (160 km2) of water, or 52%.
It has the second-smallest land area and the smallest total area of any county in Massachusetts.
