The county was established in 1876 and incorporated in 1888.
It is named after Confederate States Army General Stonewall Jackson.
Stonewall County was founded from the Young Territory in 1876.
It was initially part of Young County, then Throckmorton County, and lastly Jones County until becoming fully organised in 1889.
The county has a total area of 920 square miles (2,400 km2), of which 916 square miles (2,370 km2) are land and 3.9 square miles (10 km2) (0.4%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
