Morris is the county seat.
On February 20, 1862, the Minnesota legislature established the county by act.
It was not organized at the time, and there was no county seat.
Isaac Stevens, who led a railroad survey party across Minnesota in 1853 and was instrumental in bringing national attention to the Minnesota Territory, was honored with the county’s name.
The county is 575 square miles (1,490 km2) in size, with 564 square miles (1,460 km2) of land and 12 square miles (31 km2) (2.0%) of water.
