Sterling City is the county seat.

W. S. Sterling, an early resident in the area, is honoured by the name of the county. Sterling County used to be one of Texas’s 30 prohibition, or “dry,” counties, but it is now a “wet” county.

The county has a total area of 924 square miles (2,390 km2), of which 923 square miles (2,390 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) (0.01%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
