Duncan is the county seat.
When Oklahoma became a state, the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory and Comanche County in Oklahoma Territory were used to make the county.
It was named after John Hall Stephens, a politician from Texas.
The Duncan, OK micropolitan statistical area is in Stephens County.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 891 square miles (2,310 km2), of which 21 square miles (54 km2) (2.4% of the total area) are covered by water.[5] It is in the plains of the Red Bed.
