The population was 158,292 at the time of the 2020 census.
St. Cloud is the county seat and the largest city.
The county was founded in 1855 by European Americans and has been part of the Minnesota Territory since 1849.
It was named after Isaac Ingalls Stevens before being renamed after Charles Thomas Stearns.
Stearns County is included in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Combined Statistical Area as well as the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The total area of the county is 1,390 square miles (3,600 km2), of which 1,343 square miles (3,480 km2) is land and 47 square miles (120 km2) is water (3.4%).
