The county was made in 1873, and in 1890, it was put together.
It is named after David S. Stanley, who was in charge of the nearby Fort Sully from 1866 to 1874.
The Pierre, SD Micropolitan Statistical Area has Stanley County as a part of it.
A part of the area is used for farming.
The land slopes to the east, and its highest point, at 2,198 ft (670 m) ASL, is in the SW corner of the county.
The county covers 1,517 square miles (3,930 km2), of which 1,444 square miles (3,740 km2) are land and 73 square miles (190 km2) (4.8%) are water.
