Sibley County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota.
It is in the south central part of the state. As of the census in 2020, there were 14,836 people living there.
Gaylord is the county seat.
From 2013 to September 2018, Sibley County was a part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area.
On March 5, 1853, the county was made.It was named after Henry Hastings Sibley, who lived there.
Henderson was the first place where the county seat was set up.
In 1879, a courthouse was built there and put into use. It was used as the county seat until 1915, when it was moved to Gaylord after people in Gaylord asked the county supervisors to do so.
The original courthouse is now the Henderson Community Building, which is where city offices are located.
The county covers 601 square miles (1,560 km2), 589 square miles (1,530 km2) of which are land and 12 square miles (31 km2) of which are water, or 2%.
The Rush River gets most of its water from Sibley County.
