Centre is the county seat.
The county was set up in 1835 as a city in Mexico.
In 1837, it was made into a county.
It is named after Isaac Shelby, who fought in the American Revolution and later became Kentucky’s first governor.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 835 square miles (2,160 km2), of which 796 square miles (2,060 km2) are land and 39 square miles (100 km2) (4.7%) are water.
