Benton is the county seat.
The county was made in 1821 and named after the first person from Missouri to serve in the U.S. Congress, John Scott.
The Sikeston, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area is part of Scott County, and it is also part of the Cape Girardeau-Sikeston, MO-IL Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 426 square miles (1,100 km2), of which 420 square miles (1,100 km2) are land and 5.9 square miles (15 km2) (1.4%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Mississippi River is what separates the county from Illinois on its eastern side.
