It is also a part of the Jacksonville, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Morgan County was split into Scott County in 1839. Scott County, Kentucky, gave it its name.
The county has a total area of 253 square miles (660 km2), of which 251 square miles (650 km2) are land and 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2) (0.7%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Illinois River runs along the western edge of the county.
