Schley County is a county in the U.S. state of Georgia.
It is in the west central part of the state. (The correct way to say Schley is “sly,” which is also how Governor William Schley, for whom the county is named, said it.)
As of the 2020 census, there were 4,547 people living in the county.
Ellaville is the county seat.
Schley County is a part of the Micropolitan Statistical Area of Americus, GA.
The county was made on December 22, 1857, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly. It is named for William Schley, who was a U.S. Representative and Georgia’s 36th governor.
In 1858, the first courthouse for a county was built. The current courthouse for Schley County was built in 1899.
The county has a total area of 168 square miles (440 km2), of which 167 square miles (430 km2) are land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2) (0.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
