Schenectady is a city in the U.S. state of New York.
It is the county seat of Schenectady County. With a population of 67,047 as of the 2020 census, the city was the ninth most populous in the state.
The city is in the eastern part of New York, near where the Mohawk and Hudson rivers come together.
It is in the same metropolitan area as the state capital, Albany, which is about 15 miles (24 km) to the southeast.
The city has a total area of 11.0 square miles (28.49 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.23 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) are water, according to the US Census Bureau.
