It is located to the southeast of the Toledo Metropolitan Area.
The population was 58,896 at the time of the 2020 census.
Fremont is the county seat.
On February 12, 1820, portions of Huron County were combined to form the county.
Sandusky County is included in the Fremont, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 418 square miles (1,080 km2), of which 408 square miles (1,060 km2) is land and 9.3 square miles (24 km2) (2.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
