Monticello is the county seat, and Blanding is the most populous city.
The county was named by the Utah State Legislature after the San Juan River, which was named by Spanish explorers (in honour of Saint John).
At the Four Corners, San Juan County shares boundaries with Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.
San Juan County is located in the state of Utah’s southeastern portion. Its borders with Utah coincide with the borders of Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.
The Four Corners Monument, which marks the intersection of these borders, is located in the county’s extreme southeastern corner.
