The population was 23,333 at the time of the 2020 census.
Marshall is the county seat.
The county was founded on November 25, 1820, and was named after the area’s salt springs.
During the nineteenth century, this county was primarily settled by migrants from the Upper South and was located in the region known as “Little Dixie” along the Missouri River.
Many plantations were operated with the forced labour of enslaved workers during the antebellum period.
At the start of the American Civil War, African Americans made up one-third of the county’s population, but their share of the population has since dropped to less than 5%.

The county has a total area of 767 square miles (1,990 km2), of which 756 square miles (1,960 km2) is land and 11 square miles (28 km2) (1.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau
It is situated on the banks of the Missouri River.
