The population was 272,912 as of the 2020 census, making it Indiana’s fifth-most populous county.
It was founded in 1830 and called for the St. Joseph River, which flows past it to Lake Michigan.
South Bend is the county seat.
St. Joseph County is included in the South Bend-Mishawaka, IN-MI, Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 461.38 square miles (1,195.0 km2), of which 457.85 square miles (1,185.8 km2) (or 99.23%) is land and 3.54 square miles (9.2 km2) (or 0.77%) is water, according to the 2010 census.
