It had a population of 52,549 according to the 2020 census.
Hahnville is the parish seat, and Luling is the most populous community.
The parish was established in 1807, following the United States’ purchase of Louisiana in 1803.
It was originally part of the German Coast, an area along the Mississippi River’s east bank settled by many German pioneers in the 1720s.
Historically, this was a sugarcane plantation area, but the energy industry is now the parish’s economic foundation.
The Mississippi River divides St. Charles Parish, which includes territory on both sides of the river.
The parish of St. Charles is part of the New Orleans-Metairie metropolitan statistical area.
The parish has a total area of 411 square miles (1,060 km2), of which 279 square miles (720 km2) is land and 132 square miles (340 km2) (32%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
