Rowan County is a county in the Eastern Kentucky Coalfield region of the U.S. state of Kentucky.
It is in the northeastern part of the state.
As of the census in 2020, there were 24,662 people living there.
Morehead is the county seat.
The county was made in 1856 from parts of Fleming and Morgan counties.
It was named after John Rowan, who was a senator and representative from Kentucky.
It is a moist county, which means that selling alcohol is illegal.
However, unlike a dry county, it has a “wet” city, called Morehead, where packaged alcohol can be sold.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 286 square miles (740 km2), of which 280 square miles (730 km2) are land and 6.5 square miles (17 km2) (2.3% of the total area) are water.
Its highest point is called “Limestone Knob” and is about 1,409 feet (429 m) above mean sea level.
