The county was made on August 20, 1798, and it is named after James Ross, who was a Federalist senator from Pennsylvania.
Ross County is a part of both the Columbus-Marion-Zanesville, OH Combined Statistical Area and the Chillicothe, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county covers a total area of 693 square miles (1,790 square kilometers), of which 689 square miles (1,780 square kilometers) are land and 3.8 square miles (9.8 square kilometers) are water, or 0.6%.
Ross County is the second-largest county in Ohio in terms of land area, behind Ashtabula County. It is also the fifth-largest county in terms of total area.
