The county was made in 1903 out of Chaves and Guadalupe counties.
It was named after Theodore Roosevelt, who was president at the time.
The Texas state line runs along the eastern edge of the county.
The Portales, NM Micropolitan Statistical Area is part of Roosevelt County.
It is also part of the Clovis–Portales, NM Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 2,455 square miles (6,360 km2), of which 2,447 square miles (6,340 km2) are land and 7.2 square miles (19 km2) (0.3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
