The county was established by act of the territorial legislature on May 23, 1857, but it was not organized at the time.
The area was named Pipestone County, and the current Pipestone was given the name Rock County.
The county is 483 square miles (1,250 km2) in size, with 482 square miles (1,250 km2) being land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2) (0.06%) being water.
The county as a whole is in the hot summer humid continental climate zone (Dfa).
