As of the census in 2020, there were 6,529 people living there. Meeker is the county seat. The Spanish name for the White River, which runs through the county, is where the name of the county comes from.
Rio Blanco County was made when Garfield County was divided on March 25, 1889. The county seat moved to the town of Meeker.
The county has a total area of 3,223 square miles (8,350 km2), of which 3,221 square miles (8,340 km2) are land and 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2) (0.06%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
