At the time of the 2020 census, there were 4,663 people living there.
This made it the second-smallest county in Iowa. Mount Ayr is the county seat.
The county is named after Maj. Samuel Ringgold, a hero of the Battle of Palo Alto in May 1846, which was part of the Mexican–American War.
It is one of 26 counties in Iowa with names that are unique in the whole country.
The county has a total area of 539 square miles (1,400 km2), of which 535 square miles (1,390 km2) are land and 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2) (0.6%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
