Richmond County is a county in North Carolina, located on the state’s central southern border.
Rockingham is the county seat.
The county was named after Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox, and was formed in 1779 from a portion of Anson County.
The population was 42,946 at the time of the 2020 census.
The county has a total area of 480 square miles (1,200 km2), of which 474 square miles (1,230 km2) is land and 6.1 square miles (16 km2) (1.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
By land area, it is the 38th largest county in the state.
