Sidney is the county seat.
In 1914, part of Dawson County was taken from that county to make Richland County. Early on, Gate was suggested as a name for the county.
However, Richland was chosen instead to attract more people to move there.
The county has a total area of 2,103 square miles (5,450 km2), of which 2,084 square miles (5,400 km2) are land and 19 square miles (49 km2) (0.9%) are water, according to the US Census Bureau.
